Police search for clues in deadly shooting

Police have released little information about how and why someone shot a Tacony man to death inside a car outside the victim’s home on Friday, but the slaying must have been extraordinarily violent.

In the aftermath of the gunfire, investigators marked at least 10 empty shell casings that had littered the 4400 block of Longshore Ave. Unofficially, police told news reporters that the victim’s car had been struck about a dozen times.

Officers were initially called to the scene at 12:12 a.m. in response to a report of a person with a gun. They found Justin Jones, 37, inside or next to his white 2004 BMW 740i with multiple wounds of the upper torso. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

One police commander told reporters at the scene that Jones apparently had been entering or exiting the parked vehicle when someone shot him and the victim collapsed to the street, leaving the driver’s door open. An official police version stated that Jones was “slumped” in the driver’s seat of the car when police found him.

Police did not identify any suspects or disclose a suspected motive. ••
